The Importance of Being Charitable

Posted on April 26, 2019October 31, 2019 by Riel

As we grew up, we likely heard time and time again that sharing is caring. That same ideology exists in the adult world and no longer applies to just sharing toys with a sibling or daycare pal. Sharing because one cares can be executed in a number of ways, though, there is one way that is one of the most easiest, helpful, thoughtful and beneficial: donating to charity.

While
there is probably a long scroll that is dedicated to listing the several
thousand reasons why being charitable is so important, in an effort to keep
things simple for now, here are just some positive aspects of being a donor to
charity:

  • Can benefit others all around the
    globe
  • Sets a good example for future
    generations
  • Makes positive impacts locally
  • Tax deductible
  • Promotes a happier, healthier life

Global Impact

Helping
thy neighbor doesn’t just apply to the family next door; it radiates to our
neighbors that span across the globe. Everywhere, in every country, state,
providence and island, there is someone in need. With that being said, there is
never a better time to donate to charity than anytime it is possible.

The
American dollar can translate to being worth much more in other areas of the
world than it is in America, and sometimes even just $10 USD can feed a family
of seven for three weeks elsewhere in the world. For example, $1.00 United
States Dollar is worth $8.50 Norwegian Kroner.

By
choosing to donate to a country other than one’s own, the possibility of
helping a lot by giving a little is heightened immensely. For those that wish
to donate but can’t afford to send buckets of cash to a good cause, this may be
the best option.

Being An Excellent Example

Children
see; children do. Choosing to be charitable, especially if one decides to
involve youth in the process, can help children learn that being a donor is a
positive thing. It can encourage them to eventually incorporate being a donor
to charities later in their lives, which helps set the course for a better,
brighter future, both for the younger generations of now and those in need in
the future.

Local Impact

All
charity donations do not necessarily need to be sent to a globally or
nationally recognized organization. In almost every community, there are a
number of ways that individuals can make a difference through placing
donations.

Food
banks are almost always in need of food, household items such as dish soap,
hygiene products such as shampoo and other supplies, and often rely on mainly
donations to keep their patrons able to receive what they need to meet the
demands of their own households. In counties in northeast Montana with only a
few thousand residents, food banks have had to limit the number of items that
those that utilize the food bank can take home each month, as there is not
enough funding or donations to meet demands.

Many
churches and other places of worship rely on charity donations to keep their
doors open. The same can be said for many nonprofit hospitals and nursing homes
who serve hundreds each year and are home to many sick, disabled elderly
persons. For a 95 year old man suffering from dementia with no living family, a
single donation can mean the difference between a bed to sleep in and spending
the remainder of their life on the streets.

Tax Deductions

Come
tax season, many individuals find that time to be quite stressful, and they
only hope that their tax returns give them a pat on the back (or a heftier
wallet). One of the best ways to see that giving to charity doesn’t mean that
you’ll never see that money again is by choosing to donate to charities that
are qualified, or in other words, consider donations as tax deductible
expenses. This helps to reduce one’s taxable income, thus lowering the tax bill
entirely. The Internal Revenue Service believes that giving should pay off, and
many large donors to charity are well aware of that once their tax returns are
made available to them.

Improves Emotional Well-Being

There are many studies that suggest that donating to charity has a positive impact on an individual’s mental health, making them happier and healthier. As doctors and scientists alike have told us, the key to a long life is by living it as healthy as possible, and that definitely includes having a healthy mind. By putting others before oneself in the form of being a donor to charity, it is not only the donation recipients who will have a lasting positive experience.

In this article posted by the Mental Health Foundation, the many health benefits of giving to charity are listed as well as ways to go about helping out that will best benefit one’s individuality.

Why Truth Matters

Posted on April 3, 2019October 31, 2019 by Riel

At
some point during the time when we are small children, we tell a lie.
Afterwards, we may be taught never to lie, but rather to tell the truth. Either
we follow that wise advice for the rest of our lives or not, but as adults,
there should be no reason that we can not consider telling the truth as one of
the golden rules.

There are often times where having to tell the truth may be scary, but what many people come to realize is, so is telling a lie. The list of what could go wrong when telling the truth is far shorter than the list of troubles that can occur through telling a lie.

Typically when you lie, it requires you to keep lying so you don’t have to tell the truth of your original lie. This bad habit can lead to a whirlwind of unhealthy habits that all could have been avoided by not telling a lie, even the smallest ones.

Let’s take a look at some of the common lies people may say each day, often referred to as “white lies”. Here are some examples:

  • “I agree that your shirt is pretty!”
  • “Yes, the green paint does look nice
    in here.”
  • “No, I’m not mad that you ate my
    last slice of pizza.”
  • “Don’t worry, you added enough sugar
    in my coffee.”

While these lies may seem harmless, and the one lying makes the excuse that they’re just being nice or trying not to hurt someone’s feelings, every lie can be considered detrimental to the person lying and those that are being lied to.

Getting caught in a lie causes a great deal of anxiety, depression, trust issues and more for all involved. What’s worse: finding out you’ve been lied to by your friend or co-worker or knowing that they have been honest, even if what they said hurt a little?

The Importance of Truth

The
truth will set you free. Being true to one’s self and others has endless
benefits, as there’s nothing weighing on your soul and those around you believe
you’re honest. Honesty seems nearly impossible to come by, but is one of the
most valuable traits to acquire. It takes a lifetime to build up trust, but an
instant to lose it. No lie is worth jeopardizing a relationship, your career,
or anything else.

Consequences

The consequence of being able to tell the truth is that people may point out your ability to be brutally honest. This is not necessary a bad thing. It is better to be brutally honest than be brutally harming others through your string of lies.

The truth always comes out one way or another, and this pattern occurs in schools, workplaces, online and even at home. The environment that telling the truth creates is a pleasant one, filled with less worries and doubts and more honesty and togetherness. It is most easy to function when everyone on the team knows the rules. If one is not honest about something, catastrophe is to be expected, and it is not fair to put everyone around you in fear of that.

If one is not honest about something, catastrophe is to be expected, and it is not fair to put everyone around you in fear of that.

In our society, not telling the truth has caused a wide range of mishaps that are far from repair and only seem to continue and worsen. In an article with Psychology Today, Dr. Ira E. Hyman, Jr., a professor of psychology at Western Washington University, discussed how lying has had a detrimental impact on our daily lives in areas such as school, politics and the media. That article can be viewed here: www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/mental-mishaps/201612/does-the-truth-matter%3famp.

Conclusion

Today, people around the globe are finding it more and more difficult to find reliability wherever they need to seek it. Telling the truth is important as it helps prevent such hardships. By telling the truth, you’ve just been honest with your mission to being the change you wish to see in the world. One spark truly can start a fire; by sharing the truth with others, our only hope is that they too can find the benefits in being true, always.
